Commemorative 2 Euro coin of Portugal, issued in 2024. This collector's euro coin was issued on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the revolution of April 25, 1974, the so-called carnation revolution.
On April 25, 1974, a group of young officers launched a largely peaceful coup that ended the long-standing dictatorship of the Estado Novo regime in Portugal. During the so-called "Clove Revolution", participants in the revolution and the population used carnations as a sign of peace. The revolution, which marked the end of censorship and political oppression, remains a powerful symbol of peace and democracy today.
The motif of the euro coin shows a carnation flower in the center surrounded by eccentric circles. In the right margin, the statement "Esta é a matruda que eu esperava" from the work "O nome de coisas" by the poet Sophie de Mello Breyner Andresen is drawn. Translated: "This is the dawn I've been waiting for" and symbolizes the hope for a peaceful revolution.
